Advancing True Cost Accounting with the Meridian Institute
-
The food system is riddled with hidden costs—environmental, health, and social—that are largely invisible in conventional decision-making. Despite growing interest, True Cost Accounting (TCA) faces barriers to adoption due to lack of standardization, high complexity, and minimal incentives for stakeholders to drive change.

Approach
Nature Interactive led a systems-informed research and strategy initiative focused on product innovation and sourcing. Our goal: uncover pathways for enterprise decision-makers to adopt TCA practices.Methodology included:
Landscape analysis of TCA adoption efforts across sectors
Qualitative interviews with stakeholders in CPG, retail, and pharma industries
Hypothesis development and iterative testing with real-world use cases
Opportunity mapping for integrating contextual metrics into product and sourcing workflows
Strategic synthesis of insights to inform tool design and collaboration models
Co-creation with advisors from regenerative food, data innovation, and NGO sectors
-
Identified critical inflection points for embedding TCA into sourcing and innovation pipelines
Highlighted demand (including willingness to pay) for metrics that illuminate health, ecological, and social impacts
Surfaced supplier collaboration as a key enabler of agile, de-risked innovation
Informed the design of a next-phase proof of concept aimed at accelerating systemic transformation in food and pharma supply chains
